DR. IVAN NAVARRO H.

Oral Implantology Specialist

University of Miami

Jackson Memorial Hospital

Welcome, I present my journey in oral implantology through 17 years of experience

Hospital I started my journey in the world of dental implantology in the year of 1993, when the opportunity of entering the maxillofacial surgery service, in the Mexico hospital, presented itself, service in which I developed most part of my training in dental surgery, being able to interact with all the medical and surgical experts that a mayor national hospital has. That is how Dr. Alejandro Marín, chief of this service, guided me and helped me develop my surgical and clinical abilities. About the same time, in the dates of 1993, mi good friend, Dr. Guillermo Chacón, who at the time was a resident in the oral implantology specialty of the University of Miami, gave a course in Costa Rica, my motivation was so big that, in that moment, I began my application process for the UM Program. During the application period, I took part in several courses the University of Miami gave between 1993 and 1994, by which I was accepted in the two year program.

In July of 1994, I had accomplished one of my goals. I was a resident in the Dental Implant specialty of the University of Miami, based at the Jackson Memorial Hospital. During the two years of my graduate, I had the opportunity to me great teachers who became the base of mi training, such as Drs. Carl Misch, Michael Pikos, Thomas Albertson, Morton Perel, Thomas Ford, Greg Misch, Sasha Jovanovic, Robert Marx, Stuart Kline, Edwin McGlumphy, Charles Babbush, Eulogio-Sashi López, Scott Ganz, Jack Krauser, Eric Carlson, Mark Stevens, among many others. Of course I cannot leave out my contemporary friends, whom I studied with and lived unforgettable moments. Many of them have become great national and international speakers, Drs. Guillermo Chacón, Aldo Vicari, Leo Dorado, José Peralta, Michael Peleg, Jesús Gómez, Sanjey Reddi, Andrew Colgan, Rick Ferguson, Miguel Pastrana, Scott Fimbers, Lilibeth Ayanco, Juan Carlos Arroyo, Manish Patel, Daniel Miller and many more who all walked through the rough halls of the Jackson Memorial Hospital. That is how I got the chance to learn the surgical and prosthetic part of dental implants, to finish in August of 1996 and return to my country, Costa Rica.

Once in Costa Rica, I began my private practice in the East side of the city of San Jose, more specifically Curridabat, the place where I grew up and where I have maintained myself over the years. My office is located in the building called “Galerías del Este”, Local # 14 & 15, Curridabat, San Jose, Costa Rica (phone number: 506-2225-0519). In the same place which has watched me grow and develop my dental practice, which is limited to dental implant specialty. Just as before, when I returned in 1996, I went back to my post as dental surgeon service assistant of maxillofacial surgery in the Mexico Hospital, post that was given to me and which I have developed for over 14 years. In the same way, in January of 1997, I became part of the faculty of the Latin-American University of Science and Technology (U.L.A.C.I.T.), achieving another one of my professional goals, becoming a university teacher, in which I was in charge of the surgery and oral implantology department, position in which I managed the theory and practice part of dental surgery for a period of eight years. In 2005, I decided to only manage the Oral Implantology clinic, position I hold until today.

Since 1997 until today, I have been incredibly passionate about teaching, for that reason I became part of the editorial comity of the journal called “Dentista Empresario”, in which I was written over 30 scientific articles. I also became part of the board of directors of the Costarican Dental Congress Association (A.C.C.O.), organizing and collaborating in multiple courses, speeches and congress. But it wasn’t until the year 2000 where I was able fulfill one of my biggest achievements in my career, in conjunction with the ULACIT, the ICOI (International College of Oral Implantologists), the university of Miami and my colleagues Dr. Miguel Alfaro and Thomas Ford, we created the first 6 months training course in Oral Implantology, giving the dentist new tools to integrate the dental implants in his everyday practice in a predictable and responsible way. This course is given once a year, since the year 2000, and we have proudly completed nine courses without interruption, training over 100 dentists of all specialties in the Oral Implantology field. Creating new bonds with different universities such as the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana de Colombia, the UNAM, the University of Miami, University of Ohio and entities such as the ICOI, IPS, AO, Colegio de Cirujanos Dentistas de Costa Rica. During all these years as coordinator and director of the course, I have learned a lot about the colleagues that have come here to give speeches and I’ve been able to keep myself up to date with all the new knowledge and latest technologies in the world of Oral Implantology. Because of this, I have been chosen to become the leader in opinion of several implant companies represented in Costa Rica, giving me the opportunity to extend my horizons by giving speeches and conferences internationally, in North America, Central America, South America and the Caribbean.

As of my professional practice in Oral Implantology, I am very proud to say I’ve placed over 4000 implants in all the main commercial houses represented in Costa Rica, such as Zimmer, MIS, Implant Direct, Nobel-Biocare, Intralock, Imtec and 3I. In the same way, the permanent or removable rehabilitation of countless patients in which we’ve been able to make a significant change in their life.
